You may find that because it has been sitting that they are frozen and inoperable or that they will need adjustment or heaven forbid a rebuild and replacment. If you can crank it drive it and check out the steering clutches and brakes.do they work, should pull back about 3 to 4" on the stick to disengage and brakes should hold. If really lucky won't smoke even for a diesel. You probably can look her mechanicals over without much difficulty, ie engine starts, runs and doesn't blow any weird color smoke. I will temper all of my answers as I believe I have done by saying I am new to this and no expert.

I hope that I have been some help, but feel free to ask questions. Minor engine repair/tune-up and believe that I will need to replace (1) roller and renew the bearings in the idlers. I will confess that I paid $3,750.00 for mine realizing that it would need some work. I assume you are fairly familiar with what to look for on these crawlers and although $3,000.00 at first blush sound like a good price, if it needs alot of work then it isn't all that hot. Where is the crawler located? I know that my compact tractor has a 3 cylinder diesel and I would hate to have to crank her without glow plugs on a cold day. I suppose if the weather is warm enough that this wouldn't be a problem, sometimes. The only reason I could possibly imagine is that the glow plug circuit or the glow plugs went out and they were too cheap to fix it. Now as to why anyone would remove the glow plugs. I have purchased parts from a few different places to include NAPA, Deere and some other tractor repair places. I have not had a bit of difficulty yet with any part. I have not had any trouble with parts and have purchased things like sediment bowl filters, muffler, points, plugs, condensers, fuel sending unit, carb repair kit and a carb and last a new tachometer. Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: John Deere 1010 HELP! in reply to wes, 05-08-2001 06:28:58Īs I had mentioned, I just purchased a 1010 with the gas engine and I am going through it before I put it to work. It starts instantly winter or summer with out glow plugs or ether! Robert Mines made me quite a bit of $$ off my farm too. Personally, i think the Case 450's are under rated as they sell for less than a Deere. I now have a Case 450, and it's been a great trouble free tractor. I'd save up more $$ and at least get a 350 diesel. If i wanted this small of a JD dozer for work, i'd never get a 1010. He sure was proud of that thing, i guess he never really tried to get any real work out of it! I never told him what i "really" thought of it. It drank fuel, and i was glad to see it go. Although it ran good, i thought it was under powered. I rented it for a week to push out some willows, and to rebuild some of the road on my farm. He had it done pro., and had a lot of $$ into it by the time the rest of the tractor was done. I hope i don't offend anyone, but my friend bought a 1010 gas, and had it rebuilt. If you get it home and don't like it, resell it. I am at a loss as to how it helps to inject raw diesel into the intake, but have personally witnessed it done and it worked.Īll in all, I would say go for it. I have seen, and the parts book shows, a fuel primer just like on an airplane. They are a hard starter, as were most diesels of that age. Oversized pistons are available, you just bore the sleeves.Īll of the 1010 diesels had glow plugs. It is a deck sleeve engine, so if you want to sleeve it, that will have to come from Deere. For internals or trans, finals, reverser, you will probably have to look for used. As far as parts availability, bearings, seals, reverser plates, wiring harness, and many other parts are current from Deere. If we were all rich, we would buy new big ones, but most of us do this for fun. Neither will the 350 have the power and torque of an 850, so you can carry that arguement as far as you like. No it will not have the power and torque of a 350. It has a complete mechanical restoration on it from nose to tail. We have a 1010 gas, with a power 6-way blade on it and it is a great little rig. Expect to put some money in it, but that may be the case with anything 45 years old.
